Personal — Sandra L. Townes was born in 1944.  She began service for the Appellate Division, Second Judicial Department in 2001, appointed by Governor George E. Pataki.  Justice Townes is a Republican. 

 

Judicial — Prior to her service with the Appellate Division, the Honorable Sandra L. Townes was a New York Supreme Court Justice, Fifth Judicial District, since 2000.  She was a Syracuse City Court Judge from 1988 to 1999.

 

Government — Before she started her judicial career, Justice Townes worked for the Onondaga County's District Attorney's office from 1977 to 1987.  She was Chief Assistant District Attorney, Director of the Career Criminal and Sexual Crimes Unit, and Assistant District Attorney in the Felony Trial Unit.

 

Academic — Throughout her career, Sandra L. Townes has held many teaching positions including English Teacher and Adjunct Professor of Law at various institutions.

 

Education —  Justice Townes received her law degree from Syracuse University College of Law in 1976.  She graduated from Johnson C. Smith University with a BA in 1966.

 

Membership — Justice Townes is a member of the:  Anti-Discrimination Panel for the Fifth Judicial District; Legislative Committee of the Judiciary for the State of New York; New York State Bar Association; New York State Women's Bar Association; Onondaga County Bar Association.
