Personal — Nancy E. Smith was born in 1954.  She began service as a Justice for the Appellate Division, Second Department in 1999, appointed by Governor George E. Pataki. 

 

Judicial Positions — Prior to serving on the Appellate Division, the Honorable Nancy E. Smith was Acting Supreme Court Justice of the Ninth Judicial District in 1998.  She was a Supreme Court Justice of the Seventh Judicial District since 1997.  Justice Smith was Acting Supreme Court Justice in the Fifth Judicial District in 1997.  From 1996 to 1998 she was an Acting Family Court Judge in Monroe County.  In 1996 she was an Acting County Court Judge in Rensselaer County.  She was an Acting County Court Judge for Saratoga, Sullivan and Ontario Counties in 1995.  Justice Smith was an Acting County Court Judge in Yates County in 1994.  During the years of 1993 through 1997 Nancy E. Smith was an Acting County Court Judge in Livingston County.  She was an Acting Monroe County Family Court Judge from 1996 to 1998.  From 1993 to 1995 she was a Livingston County Acting Family Court Judge. 

 

Academic — Justice Smith was an Instructor for the New York State Bar Association from 1994 to 1996.  From 1989 to 1992 she taught the Prosecutor's Course for the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services.  She was an Instructor for the Criminal Justice Training Center from 1986 to 1992 among other academic endeavors which includes many speaking engagements.

 

Government — From 1989 to 1992, Judge Smith was Deputy Chief of Local Court Bureau/Town Court Supervisor.  Nancy E. Smith worked as a Monroe County Special Assistance District Attorney from 1988 to 1989.  From 1982 to 1988 she was a Monroe County Assistant District Attorney. 

 

Private Practice -  Nancy E. Smith was an Associate for Greisberger, Zicari, McConville, Cooman, Morin & Welch, P.C. in Rochester from 1984 to 1985. 

 

Education - She received her JD from Vermont Law School in 1980 and graduated from Allegheny College with a BA in 1976.    

 

Memberships — Justice Smith is a member of the:  Board of Directors of the Legal Aid Society; Monroe County Bar Association; National Association of Women's Judges; Livingston County Bar Association; Greater Rochester Association of Women's Attorneys; Inns of Court; Gender Fairness Committee; Advisory Board Pittsford Youth Service, Inc., New York State Bar Association; Women's Bar Association of the State of New York.
