Southern District Board of Judges Appoints Cecelia G. Morris to Serve as Chief Judge of United States Bankruptcy Court
The Board of Judges of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York has appointed the Honorable Cecelia G. Morris to serve as the next Chief Judge of the United States Bankruptcy Court in the Southern District of New York.
Judge Morris has served on the bench of the Bankruptcy Court since July 1, 2000. Prior to her appointment, Judge Morris was the Bankruptcy Court’s Clerk of Court, having served in that role from 1988 to 2000. Judge Morris has also been an Assistant District Attorney in Griffin, Georgia; clerked at the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Middle District of Georgia; and practiced law in a private law firm. She received her Juris Doctor from John Marshall Law School and attended West Texas State University.
"Cecelia Morris is the consummate bankruptcy jurist,” said Southern District Chief Judge Loretta A. Preska. “She has a keen technical expertise and is a fantastic problem-solver. The Board of Judges is very confident that she’ll lead the Southern District Bankruptcy Court with skill and grace."
Judge Morris’s appointment is effective as of March 1, 2012. She is taking over as Chief Judge for U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Arthur J. Gonzalez, who is retiring after sixteen years on the bench to become a full-time faculty member and Senior Fellow at New York University School of Law.
